A Day To Reflect… Thursday, July 31st 2014 Day 3

Kennedy Center, Watergate & Washington Monument
Today's ride was definitely going to start out as light hearted and under 15 miles. My legs are still tired from the 44 miler that started off the program and it's starting to show now, but I am forcing myself to trudge through in order to meet my goals. I started off by driving to Hain's Point and riding over to Rosslyn, Va. and then heading back over to Georgetown and finally ending up at the Korean War Memorial. This was a ride for pleasure so I just took in the great weather and made it part work out and part sightseeing.

Rosslyn, Va.

If you are in the area, I seriously recommend that you take the time to check out the Korean War Memorial, The Lincoln Memorial & The Reflecting Pool, they are so worth the time and the fact that they are free makes them the best deal in the city. As a matter of fact, as I rode around I found myself being grateful that I am in a city that encourages you to whistle while you work and helps to take your mind off of the task(s) at hand. There's no place that I would rather try to lose 45 pounds in 30 days in, it's easy here, so much to look at, so much to take in and so many that encourage you just by being active. You gotta Love D.C.

Least Mode (Weigh In Day)… Wednesday, July 30th 2014 Day 2

RFK Stadium Bike Path Kingman Island

Today is Wednesday, July 30th and I've decided that Wednesday's will be my weigh in days.

My start off weight is 270 lbs. and waist size is 47 inches and belly is 50 inches

After such a great day yesterday, I decided that I would take it easy today, so a short 15 mile ride was the plan as I left to go riding. I figured a ride around the local trails would suit me just fine for a quick trip and with that I was off.

I headed to Anacostia park and took the new trail that lead me to RFK Stadium and then back around to the 11th St bridge, finally ending up back into the park and around again for a second trip. The grand total:

Distance: 15.22 Miles
Pedaling Time: 1 hours 22 minutes
Avg Speed: 11
Real Time: 2 Hours 2 minutes

Anacostia Park (Notice the Osprey Aircraft?)
11th St Bridge View
The Navy Yard Trail SE
In my second week I'll get into more detailed information about the trails, I just need to get used to them again before waxing poetic about them to relay a true depiction of them as I ride.

Beast Mode… Tuesday, July 29th 2014 Day 1

Mama told me there'd be days like this, days in which you would be the catalyst to positive change in your own world. I started out by eating breakfast and then setting out on a bike trip.

When I started I was mostly unaware of where I would go, or how many miles I would want to travel, let alone be able to. I knew that I would head to a trail, (The Washington DC area has the best system of trails that I've ridden on in the U.S.) ride for at least two hours and try to put in at least 20 miles.

First off, I couldn't have chosen a better day to go riding, it was 82 degrees with a gentle breeze and the trails were fairly empty so my struggle would be witnessed by fewer folks. I started off in Anacostia and through the park then past National's Ball Park and on to Alexandria, which took about 45 minutes and logged 12.67 miles. I stopped at The Woodrow Wilson Bridge in Alexandria, Va. and saw what I took a picture of below, so off I went.

Road Map To Mount Vernon Bike Trail
Deciding to continue on to Mount Vernon was the best thing that I could have done. I had a breeze at my face, (not good for riding) and a mostly uphill climb, but I felt great and knew I had another 8 miles in me. I made it there, rested for 30 minutes and then returned home. Final results for the day:

Distance: 44.12 Miles
Pedaling Time: 4 hours 8 minutes
Avg Speed: 10.6
Real Time: 5 Hours 30 minutes

For my first day back I'll admit that I went kind of hard, sort of beast mode, but if you are going to do it, do it big. I chose to pick one of the more difficult rides to challenge myself and prove that I was really up for the road that lay ahead. I also decided that I will ride 5 days a week with a ride of at least 40 miles every Tuesday, culminating in a century ride (100 mile) on September 3rd 2014. Let's see how tomorrow turns out, after all, this is only day. Today was a good day. Not bad at all for a guy weighing 270 lbs., huh?
